The Mirage 4000 is a twin-engine, multirole strike fighter of French origin.
Design[]
The Mirage 4000 was designed as a twin-engine, high-performance multirole fighter. Building upon the success of the single-engine Mirage 2000, the 4000 featured a scaled-up airframe, offering greater fuel capacity, payload, and range, making it more suitable for long-range missions and heavy-duty multirole operations. At the heart of its design was the classic delta-wing layout, a hallmark of Dassault aircraft, providing excellent aerodynamic performance at high speeds and altitudes. To improve handling and agility, especially at lower speeds and in tight maneuvers, the Mirage 4000 incorporated fly-by-wire flight controls, which allowed for a relaxed static stability design and greater control responsiveness. The airframe was built using composite materials and aluminum alloys, ensuring strength without excessive weight. The aircraft was also fitted with canard foreplanes - small, wing-like surfaces near the cockpit—which enhanced pitch control and lift, especially during takeoff, landing, and dogfighting.
Firepower[]
The Mirage 4000 was designed to deliver powerful and flexible firepower for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Equipped with two internal 30mm DEFA 554 cannons, it had a strong foundation for close-range engagements and strafing runs. These cannons were capable of high rates of fire and were ideal for dogfighting or precision ground attacks. Its eleven external hardpoints allowed it to carry a wide and sophisticated array of weapons. In the air-to-air role, it could be armed with Magic II short-range missiles, Super 530 medium-range missiles, and potentially the more advanced MICA missiles in upgraded configurations. This gave the Mirage 4000 a solid combination of close-in combat and beyond-visual-range (BVR) capabilities. For ground-attack and strike missions, the aircraft could carry laser-guided bombs, free-fall bombs, cluster munitions, and stand-off weapons, such as the AS-30L or anti-radiation missiles. Its heavy payload capacity—more than 8,000 kg - meant it could carry mixed combat loads, including fuel tanks, electronic pods, and precision-guided munitions for long-range strike missions.
Avionics[]
The Mirage 4000 featured advanced avionics for its time, including a multimode radar capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground targeting, fly-by-wire flight controls, a Head-Up Display (HUD), and integrated navigation and weapons management systems. These systems were designed to enhance situational awareness and multirole mission flexibility.
Mobility[]
The Mirage 4000 was powered by two Snecma M53-P2 afterburning turbofan engines, each producing around 95 kN of thrust. These engines provided excellent high-speed performance, enabling the aircraft to exceed Mach 2.2 and deliver strong acceleration, climb rate, and payload capacity for both air combat and strike missions.
