The F-111F Aardvark is a supersonic, medium-range tactical attack aircraft of US origin.

Design[]

The F-111 Aardvark was a twin-engine, variable-sweep wing aircraft designed primarily for long-range strike missions. It stood out for its swing-wing configuration, allowing the wings to sweep back for high-speed flight and extend forward for better control at lower speeds, enabling it to operate from shorter runways and adapt to various mission profiles. It had a side-by-side cockpit for the pilot and weapons officer, housed in a unique escape capsule that could eject as a whole in emergencies - offering more protection than traditional ejection seats.

Firepower[]

The F-111F Aardvark was a versatile multi-role aircraft used mainly by the United States Air Force, equipped for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. For air-to-ground operations, it could carry general purpose bombs like MK 82, MK 83, and MK 84, as well as precision-guided munitions. It was capable of using laser-guided bombs (like the Paveway series) and cluster bombs for area denial. The F-111 could also fire AGM-65 Maverick missiles for precise targeting and deliver nuclear bombs, including the B43 and B61. In terms of air-to-air weapons, it was equipped to carry AIM-7 Sparrow missiles for radar-guided engagements and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles for short-range combat. Additionally, it had a 20mm M61 Vulcan gun for close-in combat. Known for its long-range strike capabilities, the F-111 could deliver weapons accurately in all weather and day or night conditions.

Avionics[]

The F-111F Aardvark featured advanced avionics for its time, centered around precision strike capabilities. It was equipped with digital flight control systems for improved handling. AN/APQ-144 radar for terrain-following flight, enabling low-level penetration at high speeds. AN/AVQ-26 Pave Tack pod, an infrared targeting and laser designator system for guiding laser-guided bombs. Navigation and weapons delivery systems integrated with inertial navigation for accurate long-range strikes. These systems made the F-111F a formidable all-weather, low-level attack aircraft, particularly effective in precision strike missions.

Mobility[]

The F-111F Aardvark was powered by two Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-100 turbofan engines. These afterburning turbofans provided around 111.6 kN of thrust each with afterburner, enabling the F-111F to achieve supersonic speeds and long-range, low-level strike capabilities. The TF30-P-100 was an upgraded version with improved reliability and performance tailored for the F-111F's precision strike role.
